At end of shift tonight, he will resign the department. The decision is not an easy one but comes after the tragedy of his young partner being killed in the line of duty only a few weeks prior. But Malloy can't get away before he is assigned a rookie fresh out of the academy. Officer Jim Reed (Kent McCord) joins Malloy for his last night and experiences a typical day at work in the car designated "Adam-12": a high speed car chase, the apprehention of two robbery suspects and a call to help save a suffocating baby. At the end of shift, Malloy can't bring himself to allow such a green, inexperienced officer to be let loose on anyone else, and decides he will stay on the force, at least a little longer.
