This week on Nashville Star, we were thrilled to be joined by pioneering southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Five contestants performed southern rock classics and one was sent home, and we also saw highlights of the contestants' trip to New York for a guest appearance on Imus in the Morning.

The show began with host Nancy O'Dell and the contestants in the crowd listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd rock the house with "Sweet Home Alabama."

Next, we took our first look at this week's Hot Spot segment, where our contestants were on the hot seat at Imus in the Morning in New York City. For some, it was their first trip to the Big Apple, and the city made a big impression. They found time to take in some of the sights - including Central Park, Times Square, Carnegie Deli, and Ground Zero - before heading to the studio where Don Imus records his show.

"I like the show," Imus warned them when they arrived, "but everybody else on the program, they're just a**holes - don't take anything personal." Indeed, the comments from Imus's cohorts were a bit harsh, including, "This looks like the 2004 version of the Village People!" Responding to Brad Cotter's performance of "If This Guitar Could Talk," they called it "sappy crap." And referring to Brent Keith, they said, "I thought we only had one girl in the group!"

Like last week, when they had to perform Willie Nelson songs in front of the man himself, the contestants had a daunting task: performing Lynyrd Skynyrd songs in front of the band. Together they performed "What's Your Name," which earned them a standing ovation.

This week there were six contestants and only five performance slots. Contestants who remained in the competition were selected to perform in random order, and Matt Lindahl was the first to take the stage. Wearing a silk paisley shirt over his overalls (and, of course, his red ball cap), he strummed his washboard through Skynyrd's "Call Me The Breeze," then smashed it dramatically at the end of the song. Billy Greenwood said, "You have changed a doubter into a believer." "Just when I think you can't take it up a notch, you wear a paisley shirt and smash a washboard," Brett Warren added, while Tracy Gershon showed her support by holding up a lighter.

Jennifer Hicks was called up next. Wearing a form-fitting black outfit and playing a silver electric guitar, she confidently began Charlie Daniels' "The South's Gonna Do it Again," a song that name-checked both Lynyrd Skynyrd and Barefoot Jerry, the group in which her dad had played. Unfortunately, a technical audio glitch occurred, so she was forced to re-start the song. "I don't know if southern rock is your thing," Brad Warren said, "but I'm so glad you're still in this contest." Brett added, "You have my vote, Jennifer. You're a pro." "I'm glad to see you kicked it up a notch," Tracy said, "because I need to see more of that." Nancy O'Dell complimented her on maintaining her composure during the technical problem.

Next to take the stage was Brad Cotter, who seemed comfortable stretching his repertoire with a performance of .38 Special's "Hold On Loosely." Tracy said, "Week after week, you have proven you're a stellar vocalist and can handle any type of song. I believe you're ready to make a record." Brad commented, "Don Imus didn't like you, so you're not old and out of style." "Nobody wants to be liked by a drooling old man in a bolo tie," Brett added.

Next we returned to more Hot Spot coverage, where we saw Imus's crew responding to Brent Keith's performance. "I'd have to give him a 4 - he's too pretty." Then we saw Lance Miller performing "George Jones and Jesus," a song that Imus himself had been plugging. The comments? "Very nice; he hit some very good notes" and "It's too country for me - too much of that twangy stuff." Finally, George Canyon performed "Letting Go," a song from a soldier's point of view. "I'm speechless; I have a tear in my eye" was one response, while another was, "I give it a 4 - the lyrics are too depressing."

George Canyon was next to perform on the stage, after a videotaped introduction that talked about how moving it was for him to visit Ground Zero, especially given his background in law enforcement. He gave a solid performance of the Marshall Tucker Band's southern rock staple "Can't You See." "I can't see you not getting a record deal," Billy said. "You are proving that cowboys and rock 'n roll are tied at the hip," added Brett. Tracy concluded, "At first I was worried about you doing a southern rock song, but you made it your own, and it was a great song for you."

Next we turned to Nancy O'Dell, who was seated with Lynyrd Skynyrd in the audience. "Why do people love southern rock so much?" she asked them. "I think it's the real deal," Johnny Van Zant replied. "It talks about real things in life, and everybody can relate to that." And what did they have to say about the contestants? "I think they're all great," Gary Rossington said. "I don't know how you guys are gonna judge this thing. They're all great, and none of them should go."

We wrapped up our Hot Spot coverage of the contestants' trip to New York, showing how Jennifer Hicks wowed Imus's entire crew. "A 10 - pants down, I mean, hands down," was the response after she performed "Could You Love You." After Matt Lindahl performed "Jump Off the Bridge," they said, "This guy looks like you just ripped him off a tractor!"

Before announcing the last performer of the evening, Nancy brought all six contestants back on the stage. Finally, she read Lance Miller's name, meaning that Brent Keith was eliminated from the competition. "Thank you guys so much," he said. "I love every one of you." Nancy gave him a kiss on the cheek and promised to buy his CD.

Meanwhile, Lance hurried to get his guitar and returned to the stage to perform the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man." "Ever since you did 'Beer Ain't Just For Breakfast,' you've been kicking a**," Brad said. "I don't know what happened, but great job." "You sang so good tonight, I think even Johnny Van Zant would sing background vocals for you," Brett added. Tracy said, "I know why Don Imus is so taken with you. Number one, he has good taste, and number two, he loves country singers, and no matter what you do that country voice comes through. You're a meat and potatoes country singer."

The show closed as Lynyrd Skynyrd performed "Red, White and Blue" - a song co-written by none other than the Warren Brothers.

Next week we'll say goodbye to another contestant, and the other four finalists will have the incredible opportunity of performing duets with Trace Adkins and Terri Clark. Don't miss it! (USA)
