The show began with the five remaining contestants (George Canyon, Brad Cotter, Jennifer Hicks, Matt Lindahl, and Lance Miller) singing Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country." This week's elimination was handled in the same way as it has been for the past couple of weeks, with the announcement of each performer meaning that they had made the latest cut and would continue on in the competition. Nancy O'Dell introduced Terri Clark and Trace Adkins, who had their own words of advice for the contestants. "I would say never let the highs feel too high, never let the lows feel too low - just go with the flow," Terri answered. Trace added, "Be thick-skinned and have a lot of patience." The first to perform was Alabama's Brad Cotter, who sang the ever-popular "Drift Away" and earned rave reviews from the judges. Tracy Gershon told him, "You have the wonderful ability to combine country music with a little bit of R&B, and I don't think anyone has done that since Ronnie Milsap. There's a void in country music; I believe you can fill that void." "If you're not in the finals, I'd be stunned," said Billy Greenwood, while Brett Warren said simply, "You are a Nashville Star." Next was this week's Hot Spot challenge, where the contestants put on a benefit block party for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. To prepare for the benefit, they visited the hospital, where they met the patients and performed for them and came away forever changed. The kids sang "Happy Birthday" to Matt, who said he'd never had it sung to him and felt it more meaningfully. "Everybody came out of there changed and with a new perspective on what we're doing," he said. The next contestant selected to perform was Canada's George Canyon. He took the opportunity to take a light-hearted romp through the Hank Williams classic, "Jambalaya," which sat very well with the judges. Billy Greenwood said, "You have the look, you have the sound, you've got a great aura, you have star quality." Brad Warren said, "A Canadian guy that looks like Buzz Lightyear doing a Cajun song - I never thought it would work, but you pulled it off!" Lance Miller was the next contestant rewarded with a performance slot, and he chose to honor his hero, Merle Haggard, by singing his classic "Big City." Brett Warren said, "People have told us that we were too rock Ôn' roll, but there's nothing we love better than a great country voice, and I'm so glad America picked you to stay with us." "You remind me of Merle Haggard, and that's a good thing," Tracy said, "but you are Lance Miller; you made it a Lance Miller song tonight." "One of my complaints about your performance is that I always have to wait 40 minutes to have a beer," Billy said, "because every time I hear you sing, I want to get a beer." And then it was down to crunch time. There were two contestants left, and only one performance slot. Nancy called Matt Lindahl and Jennifer Hicks to center stage, and then read out Matt's name as the next performer, meaning that Jennifer was eliminated from the competition. "Every single week I had my bag packed to go to the hotel," she said. "I can't believe y'all kept me in as long as you did. Thank you." Matt Lindahl took the stage wearing a cowboy hat, which he removed to reveal his trademark ball cap underneath, then launched into the Roger Miller classic, "Chug-A-Lug." His performance earned the evening's most stinging remarks from Tracy, who said, "There is no doubt that you are a funny guy and wonderful to watch. It's crunch time now, and we need to find someone who will transcend this TV show and go on and have a long career. You're not as strong a vocalist as the other guys up there. You could be this decade's Roger Miller, but to do that you have to write songs like the great Roger Miller. Do you deserve a record deal? Yes. Do you deserve this one? No." Brad Warren disagreed. "You are proof to me, the fact that you're still here, that America wants to have fun." Next we saw the results of the contestants' fund-raising efforts for St. Jude, with a block party that they hosted in the cold and rain. Through merchandise and concession sales, cast house tours, and a live and silent auction, they raised over $10,000 in just over four hours. Performers included members of both this year's and last year's casts. Then it was time for the duets! Brad Cotter and Terri Clark performed Terri's hit, "You're Easy On The Eyes." When it was over, he said about Terri, "I could look into those eyes for a long, long time." When asked what he'd say to the voting audience, Brad said, "Keep voting; don't worry about the batteries or the minutes." Next George Canyon and Trace Adkins performed Trace's hit "I Left Something Turned On At Home." "There's a star for you right there," Trace said when the song was finished. What would George say to the voters? "God bless you for taking the time to watch the show. If you're bored and looking for someone to vote for, against these guys I could use it!" Trace then returned to the stage to perform his hit, "I'm Tryin'," with Lance Miller. Lance's message to voters was, "This is a journey we've been on together. Let's just keep it going on a little longer - how about it?" The final performance of the evening was Matt Lindahl and Terri Clark singing her song, "Better Things To Do." "Thanks for voting," Matt said to the audience. I hope y'all are having fun. I am." Don't miss next week's show, when the finalists will be narrowed from four to three and our special guest will be Sara Evans!
