Box, The

First Aired in 1974

The Box was the O-10 Network's second "sex and sin" serial, following in the wake of Number 96. However, this serial differed from 96 in that the storylines followed both the private and professional lives of the characters, thereby giving it a greater narrative depth. The premise itself was simple: the lives and loves of the staff of a struggling Melbourne television station, UCV-12. The Box had a nice range of characters, including personable program manager Paul Donovan, cunning bisexual TV journalist Vicki Stafford, flamboyant homosexual director Lee Whiteman, gossiping tea-lady Mrs. Hopkins, crusty station owner Sir Henry Usher, devious Tonight show host Gary Burke, and the hapless Tony Wild, the charismatic hero of the station's cop show "Manhunt", who turned into a bumbling fool once the cameras stopped rolling. Boasting a fine ensemble cast, The Box was a hit from the first episode, and - along with Number 96 and Matlock Police - helped rescue the beleagured O-10 Network from oblivion.
