Bugs 'n' Daffy Show, The

First Aired in 1996

When the 'Kids' WB!' began broadcasting in 1995 it had a assortment of animated programs It seemed logical that the WB should feature the classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons for which Warner Brothers' Animation division is famous. Thus, a new package of the classic cartoon shorts was assembled under the title of That's Warner Bros.!. 65 episodes were compiled and aired weekday mornings or afternoons, depending on the wish of individual affiliates. The majority of shorts on That's Warner Bros.! Each half-hour show consisted of three shorts and one "Hip Clip". "Hip Clips" were excerpts of varying length pulled from certain cartoons to fill time.

But after one season, the show was updated. Its title was changed to The Bugs N' Daffy Show and given a new, catchy theme song, as Daffy and Bugs sing about the stars of the show. The new song went like this:

"My name is Daffy Duck.
And boy are you in luck.
'Cause I'm the greatest; I'm the best.
You can't help but be impressed.
Along with Bugs and all the rest...
On the Bugs N' Daffy Show.
Curtain up and lights aglow.
Places, folks, 'cause here we go.
It's the Bugs N' Daffy Show.
Starring Daffy Duck!
Marvin the Martian, Tweety, and Sylvester...
Porky the Pig and Elmer Fudd here too...
Foghorn Leghorn, Barnyard Dog...
Yosemite Sam and Michigan Frog...
Speedy Gonzales runs amok.
I'm the star, I'm Daffy Duck!
Someone hit the lights.
We just love opening nights.
Costumes, make-up, props, and sets...
Song and dance, and hot duets.
No Romeos or Juliets.
It's comedy all the way.
Time to laugh. So, let's begin.
Notify your next of kin.
Daffy Duck is starring in the Bugs and Daf...
Make 'em laugh!
The Bugs N' Daffy Show!
Prepare to be blown away!"

The format remained the same, except that the cartoons were no longer broadcast with their opening credits. They instead aired with a shot of each short's title card and an instrumental of the Bugs N' Daffy theme playing over it. The order of episodes and shorts remained the same, with one notable exception: the Three Bears cartoon, The Bee-Deviled Bruin, was pulled from shows 24 and 54, presumably for violent content, and replaced by Beanstalk Bunny in show 24 and by What's Up, Doc? in show 54.

Like all of the other networks, the WB was no stranger to the practice of cartoon-editing-for-content. Gun gags were gone from cartoons like Rabbit's Feat, Barbary Coast Bunny, and Ballot Box Bunny. Scenes that were considered too violent in other ways were also chopped, like Sylvester being electrified in Lighthouse Mouse and Muzzle Tough. Single lines of dialogue were missing, such as Bugs' reference to Amos and Andy at the end of Lighter Than Hare and Daffy's line, "So round, so firm, so fully packed, so easy on the draw," in Book Review. The show was also known to redirect cartoon shorts by changing the order of scenes. Its version of A Star is Bored was horribly mangled.

A second season of The Bugs N' Daffy Show began in September, 1997. The WB Network retained the rights to the same post-1948 titles that it had been telecasting for the previous two years, and added first-run pre-1948 cartoons to compose new episodes. At least one pre-1948 cartoon aired per show. Due to the slightly longer length of the pre-1948 cartoons, the "Hip Clips" no longer appeared in every show. Also, scenes in many of these pre-1948 cartoons were edited for content by the WB censors.

The WB dropped The Bugs N' Daffy Show from its regular schedule for the 1998-1999 season. The show did remain on a few WB affilates as a replacement for Tiny Toon Adventures, although The Bugs N' Daffy Show was no longer a regular network series.
