Carry on LaughingFirst Aired in 1975 Carry On is much more than a TV series, it is a long running line of British double entendre filled films beginning with the 1958 classic Carry On Sergeant starring among others Kenneth Connor, a frequent star of Carry On Films and a primary star of this series. Carry On began as a series of wacky comedies featuring a troupe of recurring actors in different situations such as suddenly being drafted or a hospital stay but slowly evolved into a series of hysterical historical spoof films, most notably Carry On Cleo starring Sid James as Mark Antony. This series of films continued throughout the latter half of the twentieth century and still continues today, albeit some of the primary players are now either dead or are increasingly older, but the series still survives. Many of the film stars appear in Carry On Laughing. Trying to capture the popularity of the Carry On film craze the BBC commissioned a TV series that lasted two seasons in 1975 providing the public with 13 episodes. The series did not go over so well but in regards to the history of the series of film, it has developed a cult following and managed its way over to the US for PBS distribution. Like the film series the television series does not stay focused on one main theme or subject matter, rather it leaps around and throughout time and literature to present elaborately devised double entendre schemed stories at its best. Each actor takes on a different role each episode, generally maintaining a similar comic persona as found in earlier episodes as well as earlier Carry On Films with the exception of Kenneth Connor who manages to show his diversity as an actor in this series. Although Connor does portray nervous yet triumphant characters in this series not unlike his Carry On film characters, he also gets to play a master sleuth as well as an old sex crazed eccentric millionaire type persona. Most notably in this series other than Kenneth Connor are Barbara Windsor as the bubbly blonde dimwit slut who is smarter than she seems with her constant giggling and innate ability to turn any seemingly innocent phrase into a sexual reference as well as the legendary Sid James who when in power always has to contend with bumbling buffoons with sharp wit, a clear head, and of course a great sexual appetite. James moves with the flow of events that never go as planned, adapts to the situation and follows through with a new solution and his eyes on the nearest piece of strumpet around, most probably Barbara Windsor. The entire cast of the show is not always present in each episode as the format leaves room for focus on different aspects of each actor's talent as well as outside projects for these actors who were not just TV stars, but were and some still are movie and theater stars. A few of the spoofs do have sequels that run throughout the series, but these do not flow chronologically and presentation of them is quite random. That being said, there are actually mini series within the series and the primary one of these is a spoof of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries of the 1920's that spans three episodes, the most and probably the best crafted of any tales. They are The Nine Old Cobblers, The Case of the Screaming Winkles, and The Case of the Coughing Parrot. Under The Round Table and Short Night, Long Daze feature King Arthur and his Night of the Round Table and an Upstairs, Downstairs parody is presented in Who Needs Kitchener and And in My Lady's Chamber. The rest of the series deals with Oliver Cromwell, The Battle of Hastings, The Virgin Queen and Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Gaston de Lyon among others in solo episode stories. While no longer running and long canceled A&E has released the entire series of Carry On Laughing in a two disc DVD box set for Region 1 and can be found in the U.K. amongst various Carlton Carry On Special Editions or better yet the Carry On Collection boxsets with their later films.
