CountdownFirst Aired in 1982 Countdown is a game show adapted from the French format "Des Chiffres Et Des Lettres". The first programme to appear on Channel 4's opening night, and thus also the station's longest-running programme, a lot of its popularity stems from the fact that its straightforward puzzle-type rounds are easy to play along with at home. Veteran newsreader Richard Whiteley has been the host from the beginning; he was initially supported by no fewer than four "hostesses" (Kathy Hytner, Carol Vorderman, Beverley Isherwood and Linda Barratt) though the latter two were axed as a cost-cutting move in 1983, giving Hytner and Vorderman a larger role in proceedings. Carol has been the sole hostess since 1989 and - partly in response to the fact that her presenting career was taking off elsewhere - her role gradually increased until she became effectively Whiteley's equal. The show has had many on-screen adjudicators, of whom the longest-serving and best-known is Susie Dent (January 1992 to present). The show works on a winner-stays-on basis, with contestants retiring after eight wins. The top eight players return at the end of the series to compete in a knockout phase with the top prize being the complete (20 volume) Oxford English Dictionary, worth around 6000 UKP. Champion-of-Champions competitions are also held about once every two years. If you see any mistakes on this page or if you have more infomation about this show, please submit a comment |
