Dino-RidersFirst Aired in 1988 Before Jurassic Park clawed its way into the public eye, the coolest dinosaurs in pop culture were the ones on the late 80's cartoon series Dino-Riders. Airing as part of the Marvel Action Universe, Dino-Riders lasted only 14 episodes but had a very successful action figure line distributed by Tyco Toys. The series told the story of the Valorians, a peaceful race of telepathic beings whose home planet was conquered by the Rulon Empire. A small band of survivors, led by the heroic Questar, managed to escape destruction by time travelling to Prehistoric Earth using the experimental Space Time Energy Projector (a.k.a. the S.T.E.P.). But the grotesque Emperor Krulos and his most evil Rulon commanders followed these survivors on their ship the Dreadlock. Stranded in the past, the two groups had to rely on the planet's dinosaurs to survive and battle each other. If you were looking for good to triumph over evil in great adventures that included cool-looking armored dinos and good-old 80's cheese, then Dino-Riders was the show to watch! Dino-Riders / Valorians: Questar: The heroic yet compassionate commander of the Dino-Riders. Questar’s reputation as the greatest leader on Valoria made him the only choice to head the small band of survivors that would escape Krulos’s tyranny. While a brilliant commander and strategist in battle, Questar wants to find a nonviolent method of defeating the Rulons in accordance with the ways of his people. His ultimate aim is to rebuild a peaceful civilization on Prehistoric Earth for those he is responsible for. He primarily rides a Deinonychus or in the Diplodoctus’s command pod. Yungstar: A lively young daredevil, Yungstar is always eager for action and usually resourceful enough to get himself out of the scrapes his rashness inevitably lands him in. He is a great flier (the Quetzalcoatlus is his main ride), a brave warrior, and a charismatic figure whose dedication to his fellow Dino-Riders is unquestioned. Yungstar has implicit faith in Questar and will always follow his commands — even if they require him to do boring things like repair work or wait patently before a fight. Serena: The beautiful and feisty healer. Serena can sense when any being, whether man, beast, or Rulon, is wounded; using her own inner life force she is able to heal those wounds, although at considerable risk to her own safety. While her presence is soothing, she is more than capable of holding her own in a fight while flying on her intelligent Pteranodon. Serena has a deep regard for Questar that is mutual on his part, although their relationship was always shown to be strictly platonic. Gunner: The mightiest fighter among the lead Dino-Riders, Gunner is confident, assertive, and blunt. He has a temper and is wary towards things he isn't accustomed to, but he also has a great appreciation for teamwork, a talent for training others, and a fierce devotion to his beloved Torosaurus. Gunner provides rock-steady support for Questar whenever he needs it. If the camp needs to be defended or a search and rescue organized just in the nick of time, then Gunner's the man to see. Turret: The slightly geeky but always capable “idea man” whose science talents are most often called upon for technological design. Turret is enthusiastic about his work and eager to feel useful; his modifications and original ideas are invaluable to Questar in many areas (including the continued operation of the S.T.E.P.). Occasionally overwhelmed by all the warriors surrounding him, he nevertheless knows that both he and his trusty Styracosaurus have a place on the battlefield as well as in engineering. Mind-Zei: Serena's blind grandfather is anything but a helpless old man. His finely tuned telepathic powers enable him to freely move through his surroundings, expertly operate the armory pods in the Diplodoctus, and sense approaching danger. Also, he is as fit as a young Dino-Rider and knows how to defend himself. A wise and patient advisor, Mind-Zei prizes the ideals of peace and compassion long held by the Valorians. But he's no pushover and has an iron will that Questar doesn't challenge. Llahd: The resident kid among the Dino-Riders, Llahd gets frustrated when he can’t help the adults, especially his heroes Questar and Yungstar. Llahd gets into trouble easily and has often been captured while tagging along with the others (usually against direct orders). But he means well and is learning to be cautious — both he and his favorite dinosaurs (the Pterodactyl and the Pachycephalosaurus) have provided valuable aid by bringing word of danger or defending the S.T.E.P. crystal. Icon: One of Questar’s chief advisors, Icon calculates tactical and survival probabilities instantaneously using his staff. He’s a cunning strategist who is willing to make the necessary sacrifices for the greater good, and it is his job to give Questar the hard facts that he may not want to hear. Icon’s demeanor can seem cold and detached, but in truth he’s only looking out for the Dino-Riders’ best interests. Tagg: This Dino-Rider oversees the training and care of the new dinosaurs that are recruited in the ongoing battle against Krulos. He’s a strong, brave, and caring individual who takes pride in his work and has a natural rapport with his dino friends, particularly his Pachycephalosaurus. Understanding their individual strengths enables Tagg to help determine how each dinosaur can be of use to his people. Aero: The dashing fly-boy who serves as Yungstar’s rival in the skies. Aero takes things more seriously than his rash friend, opting for the more careful yet still impressive maneuvers. A confident and competitive man, he loves giving his fellow fliers a friendly challenge. Aero is a sensible pilot on his Quetzalcoatlus who knows when to show off his expertise and when to follow Questar’s orders. Vector: A true professional, Vector has the vital job of assessing any damage sustained by the camp and organizing the repairs. He formulates the calculations through a metal gauntlet that he wears based on his knowledge of the Dino-Riders’ manpower and resources. He may not be the most exuberant man, but his reliability and mechanical skills are crucial to Questar’s goal of maintaining the community.
