For the People

First Aired in 1965

William Shatner was dynamite in his first series role as a New York City assistant district attorney. Sexy Jessica Walter was his leggy, musician wife. Bald, formerly blacklisted actor Howard Da Silva was fine as Shatner's politically sensitive boss. Lonny Chapman was a tough cop who worked with Shatner. The episodes generally followed Shatner trying to build his case rather than prosecuting the case in court. The show had a gritty New York ambience, a realistic tone, terrific New York actors, and good scripts. Executive producer Herbert Brodkin ("The Defenders") took a look at crime from the prosecutor's view, and came up with a series perhaps even more compelling than "The Defenders". A better title for this show might have been "The Prosecutor". This show was certainly a precursor to the mighty "Law and Order".
