Harper ValleyFirst Aired in 1981 The show was based on the song "Harper Valley P.T.A." and the movie of the same name "Harper Valley P.T.A." The show came about because of the movie that was filmed in 1977 and released in theatres in 1978 and when NBC aired the movie Sunday, February 24,1980 and it did good in the ratings coming in 1st beating the Olympics. The network ordered a series based on the movie. The show was originally going to be a 1 hour comedy set for September,1980 debut. The network originally ordered only 6 episodes and the man who was originally put in charge of the project was Sam Denoff who did the show "That Girl." Sam tried to make "Harper Valley" into a comedy "Peyton Place." The network rejected the idea when the scripts became one note and there was a writers strike in 1980 and later it was decided that the show would do better if it was a half hour comedy and instead of just 6 episodes the network had originally ordered since the show would be a half hour they now ordered 13 episodes.Sherwood Schwartz was then hired for the show. The show went into production in November,1980. The show debuted January 16,1981and was originally called "Harper Valley P.T.A." for it's 1st season 13 episodes and though it won 11 of it's 13 time periods and was the highest rated new show that season producers and the network disagreed of the direction the show was going in.Sherwood Schwartz left the show after the 1st season. The show had all new producers and dropped the P.T.A. from the story and name of the show when it began it's 2nd season begining with episode 14 and was renamed "Harper Valley" October 29,1981. Production stopped briefly in October,1981 when the show had changes in producers. The show was not shown for the whole month of March,1982. The show was filmed in color film for Redwood Productions for Universal MCA for it's 1st season. The 2nd season episodes were filmed in color film for 10 4 Productions for Universal MCA. The last episode was a rerun shown by NBC August 14,1982 The show produced 29 episodes in color. The show was filmed in color film. One episode was videotaped instead of filmed. Reruns were being offered for syndication in 1983 and 1985 and in the summer of 1986 reruns began for awhile by local TV channels though the show stopped reruns later in the 1980's.
