Heart and SoulFirst Aired in 2002 Based around the lives of two very different families, the well-to-do Meli family and the some what poorer Karani family. The two families live in close proximity, and are linked by various means, but primarily by Salome Karani, who works as ayah to the Melis. Apart from the two house holds, the drama also moves out into the street and to the local Kiosk, the Bar and the Hairdressing Salon. Heart & Soul is a groundbreaking initiative from the United Nations in Kenya. All twenty-four UN agencies based in Nairobi have combined forces to develop a multimedia communication strategy which aims to have a powerful impact on social attitude and behaviour across Africa. The campaign uses a prime-time television and radio soap opera called Heart & Soul to explore a broad range of social and development issues based around certain key themes: HIV/Aids, environment and natural disaster management, governance and human rights, poverty reduction, and gender issues. Additional complementary support media such as rural theatre road shows, billboards, newspapers, magazines and audio-visual education packs will be introduced over the project's three- to five-year timeframe. These will extend the communication's reach and reinforce the topics examined in the soap opera, leading to greater message understanding and retention.
