How to Survive a Marriage

First Aired in 1974

Though short-lived, this daytime serial had many fans. In fact, "How to Survive a Marriage" did well enough during its run to win an award -- for Best Sequence, at the Third Annual Afternoon TV Writers & Editors Awards, for "The Death of David Bachman". According to the September, 1975 issue of "Afternoon TV", "...[v]oters were impressed by the extremely realistic presentation of David's death in contrast to the usual sugar-coated way such subjects are treated in serial storylines." [p.20]

Fran Brill, one of the show's stars, also won an award from the Afternoon TV Writers & Editors, for her portrayal of Fran Bachman during the same award-winning sequence, "The Death of David Bachman".

According to "Daytime TV Yearbook" from 1975, this series premiered "...with its story of a wife [Fran Bachman] who loses her husband [David Bachman] and has to learn how to survive. She learns how to cope, as other men enter her life and other women both befriend and betray her." [p. 72]
