Incredible Hulk, The (1982)First Aired in 1982 The Incredible Hulk (1982) was an animated series produced by Marvel Productions, as a companion piece to their successful Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends series, hot on the heels of that show's success. After the Hulk's well-received appearance in the first season episode "Spidey Goes Hollywood", the second season of Amazing Friends was paired up with thirteen episodes of The Incredible Hulk, which were shown under the names of The Incredible Hulk And The Amazing Spider-Man for the 1982-1983 season, and The Amazing Spider-Man And The Incredible Hulk for the 1983-1984 season. The series was also shown by itself in syndication. The show took its inspiration from the Hulk's adventures in the 1960's comic, Tales To Astonish, when Bruce Banner still worked under General Ross' command at Gamma Base, and the world was unaware that he was the Hulk. Through a series of five stock transformation scenes, Saturday morning audiences would see the helpless scientist Bruce Banner transform in the Hulk week after week, while also trying to rid himself of his savage alter-ego. Supporting characters included Rick Jones, the teenager inadvertently responsible for Banner becoming the Hulk; Betty Ross, Bruce's fiance and prominent scientist on Gamma Base (similar to her role in the 1996 Hulk animated series); her father, General Ross, in command of Gamma Base; Major Ned Talbot, the general's semi-competent right-hand man; and two characters specially created for the show, Rio the owner of a nearby desert restaurant and his daughter Rita, whom Rick has a crush on. In order to keep Banner's identity a secret, the show's creators had his clothes "magically" restore themselves with no explanation (although this did happen at least once in a comic published after this series was shown) when the Hulk reverted back to Banner. Even though the Hulk was portrayed in his most famous child-like brute incarnation, ironically the actual comics of the time had just given the Hulk Banner's mind, ending the savage Hulk's reign in the strip.
