Infinite Ryvius

First Aired in 1999

a.k.a. Mugen no Ryvius

Here we are, another space-age anime. This genre of anime has been overused and abused. However, Sunrise took Infinite Ryvius from an old concept and molded it into something vaguely familiar, but definitely original. This story is loosely based on William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

The year is 2225 AD and the human race has expanded into the Solar System, colonizing Mars and Jupiter. However, 80 years earlier, a strong solar flare resulted in the creation a strange region of immense gravity on the Earth's orbital plane. It is a "plasma field" called the Geduld that links all the planets like a nervous system, which crushes any ship that strays too far into it. Despite the hazards, all mankind has populated outposts in the outer reaches of the solar system.

Earth has changed very little despite the time. We are introduced to Kouji Aiba and Aoi Housen who are serving as astronauts in-training in the Liebe Delta Astronaut Training Center which is located on the edge of the Geduld Sea. Full of other teenage cadets, they learn to navigate around the deadly obstacle the Geduld.

During a routine diving procedure, Liebe Delta plummets into the Gudeld, subjecting the crew to immense gravitational forces, extremely high temperatures, and deadly doses of radiation. The odds of escape are slim as the station is plummeting fast towards total annihilation. Juli, a member of the elite Zwei cadets, now must take charge and lead the trainees to safety aboard the Rever, a training ship hidden inside the Liebe Delta Station.

Trying to stop the station's decent, the remaining adult instructors are killed while purging what was left of Leibe Delta and giving the Rever enough time to escape. Barely escaping, the crew finds an advanced battleship called the Ryvius hidden inside the station. After demolishing the Martian fleet and being labeled as terrorists, these young astronauts have to band together, and rely on their training and each other to survive this long journey home!

There are still many answers to be answered. What is the Ryvius and why is it there? What caused the station plummet? Who's that girl in the pink suit? Well, you'll have to find out.
