ArthurFirst Aired in 1996 Arthur Read, the spectacular bespectacled aardvark stars in this children's series about growing up. Typical childhood problems such as bratty siblings, schoolyard bullies and classroom cliques are addressed by this popular program which has completed its ninth season on PBS, with new episodes expected in Late April / Early May 2006. Developed from Marc Brown's beloved books, Arthur reminds us all of how it feels to be 8 years old. Just like your average kid, Arthur overcomes the dreaded obstacles of third-grade life, such as his tough teacher Mr. Ratburn, bullies, and mountains of homework. At home, Arthur must face the pint-sized terror also known as his sister Dora Winifred, or D.W. for short. Everything between these two is a struggle; who gets control of the television remote, who can play their Crazy Bus CD, whose hobbies are dumber, that's a baby show...Will Arthur ever win one of these pointless arguments? Prob'ly never, because not only is D.W. fiercely independent, she's also very smart. But despite it all, Arthur and D.W. are still brother and sister, and when they're not arguing, they can accomplish great things together. Keeping Arthur sane are his helpful friends --- an assortment of colorful animal cohorts who always provide sound advice and a few laughs too. They are: Francine Frensky (a tomboy who would rather play sports than go to the mall), Buster Baxter (an enthusiastic gourmand), Alan "The Brain" Powers (a bona-fide 3rd grade genius, who even writes computer programs in his spare time), Muffy Crosswire (the rich girl with a real heart of gold), and Sue Ellen Armstrong (a traveler of the world and geography expert). Arthur can also sometimes be seen with Fern Walters (a soft-spoken musician with semi-hidden goth interests), Binky Barnes (acts like a bully, but enjoys pasttimes such as ballet and clarinet), George Nordgren (a somewhat shy moose who be truly entertaining when he tries), Prunella (who was supposed psychic powers and is actually in the fourth grade) and Jenna Morgan (a rarely seen cat-girl.) And of course, who could forget Pal, Arthur's lovable, loyal pet pooch? Arthur's ninth season has ended and most stations seem to be repeating episodes in a somewhat random order. The new season, according to executive producer Carol Greenwald, will be coming soon. Also, watch for the new direct-to-DVD / video release, Arthur's Missing Pal, coming soon. Also, catch the spin-off show Postcards from Buster in the PBSKids GO! block along with Arthur. In each episode, live-action and animated segments are masterfully combined as Buster explores the United States and the world. Characters: Arthur Timothy Read: He's the star of the show and can most often be seen wearing glasses, a bright yellow shirt and blue jeans. A sort of "every-kid," Arthur lives in Elwood City with his anthropomorphic friends who attend Lakewood Elementary, his sister D.W. and his parents Mr. Dave Read and Mrs. Jane Read. He enjoys doing the same things any kid would, but has a special love of reading. Arthur is eight years old, in the third grade and has a small, loyal dog named Pal. Dora Winifred "D.W." Read: Although her full name is Dora Winifred, she strongly prefers to be called simply D.W. Wearing a bright pink and white outfit, she's Arthur's sister and can sometimes be real pain, but she's also very smart and perceptive. She attends preschool and has a few friends, but is often engaged in more solitary pursuits, or plays with her imaginary friend Nadine. She has a fascination with unicorns, trolls and enjoys watching The Mary Moo-Cow Show. Although she can't yet read, she enjoys being read to. Recently, D.W. gained a new friend in Vicita when the Molinas moved next door to the Reads. Mr. David Read: Arthur and D.W.s' Dad, Mr. Read is a chef that caters to the needs of Elwood City. Although Arthur and D.W. often lament his cooking, his food services weddings and other big events around the town. At home, he's a more laid-back type of parent, but also believes in teaching respect and is there for Arthur and D.W.s' needs. He can be a bit doofy at times, but overall is still a great Dad. Mrs. Jane Read: Mrs. Read is an accountant and usually works from home, although did one time take some outside work. Mrs. Read takes care of most of the household tasks and also does a great job taking care of Arthur and D.W. Her trademark parenting style is marked by being "not mad, disappointed" when one of her children does something wrong. Arthur and D.W. know that they can generally go to her with their problems for a kind ear and helpful advice. Buster Baxter: Buster is a rabbit-boy living with his Mom. She and his father divorced when Buster was still rather young and his Dad is now a pilot flying around the world. Recently, Buster has been traveling around the world with his Dad on his new spin-off show Postcards from Buster. But he lives his Mom, who generally wants nothing more than to see Buster happy. His Mom, Bitzi Baxter, works at the Elwood City Times. She recently took a boyfriend named Harry and while they're now broken up, they still remain good friends. Buster enjoys eating and sometimes has problems at school, but can still be a bright student when he applies himself. Until recently, Buster did not enjoy reading like his friends, but with a little poke in the right direction, he's now enjoying the adventures found in books like the rest of them. Buster has asthma, but he doesn't let it slow him down. Buster is an only child and generally happy that way, but he sometimes thinks about what it would be like to have a sibling. Alan "The Brain" Powers: Although his name is Alan, only his parents and teachers call him that. To everyone else, he's known as The Brain (or more often, simply "Brain.") He's a smart guy and sometimes the things he says go over his friends' heads, but he's not snobbish and fits in well with Arthur and the other kids. Brain has a fascination with inventions, but his overly-complicated plans don't often work out. Brain's parents own an ice cream shop and he sometimes be seen on the show helping open the store or taking orders. Brain is also invaluable around Lakewood Elementary, helping out with the computer club, playing soccer and being involved in any number of activities. Don't forget!
