League of Gentlemen, TheFirst Aired in 1999 Enter the bizarre world of Royston Vasey, a small town somewhere up north, and get acquainted with its assortment of weirdos, freaks and psychos, in this smash-hit cult BBC series. Meet Tubbs and Edward. They run the Local Shop, where they're not especially welcoming towards strangers. They don't like change ("we don't even give change!" squeals Tubbs). Make sure you know how to answer their question: "are you local?" - your life will depend on it... Meet Pauline. She's the local restart officer who borders on the psychotic. Obsessed with her pens and her job, her only ally in the world appears to be Mickey Love, a simple, ape-resembling dole scrounger. Meet the Dentons, Harvey and Val, nephew Benjamin and the twins. When Benjamin comes to spend the night with the family, he didn't dream he'd still be there months later! They're rather creepy and extremely obsessed with hygiene. Oh, and toads. Then there's transsexual cab driver Barbara, butcher Hillary Briss who may or may not be responsible for unleashing a fatal plague on the town, vet Dr Chinnery, with an uncanny knack for killing his patients, and many many more. Of course, what's all the more remarkable about the show is that all the main characters are played by just three guys, who also co-write the series. After starting life as a stage show and then a radio series, the League finally made it onto TV. Series 1 of the LoG was a more sketch based style show, primarily studio based. The arc storyline for the season saw Edward and Tubbs battling to stop the building of a New Road, that would surely destroy Royston Vasey and the Local Shop. Series 2 went out of the studio more, and was darker and bleaker in tone. The self-contained sketches were fewer, and the bulk of the season revolved around a mysterious nose-bleed plague that was killing the residents. The series ended with the burning down of the Local Shop. Series 3 dispensed with the sketch format almost completely, and was darker still, while much more sophisticated. Each of the six episodes centred around one or two main characters, with a few new sub-plots. In a very Amores Perros type thing, each episode ended with the same incident - an accident -involving characters from each one. With rumours of a film and hopefully another series sometime in the future! If you see any mistakes on this page or if you have more infomation about this show, please submit a comment |
