Local Heroes (1992)First Aired in 1994 BBC science programme in which Adam Hart-Davis, clad in his trademark yellow and pink lycra cycling gear, rides around Britain - and sometimes further afield - telling the stories of famous (and not so famous) scientists and inventors, and demonstrates scientific principles with his own home-made machines. The programme originated in 1992 as a local show broadcast in the ITV Yorkshire region as "On The Edge" (the title referring to the Yorkshire coastline) but transferred to the BBC under its new title in 1994. Each programme looked at between three and six scientists who worked in a particular geographical area, with some locations visited more than once during the show's six series on BBC2. Later seasons also saw Hart-Davis take his bicycle overseas, with editions from Holland, Rome and Athens, and there were also special themed editions looking at the inventions of 1897 (for National Science Week) and female scientists. The show ended on a high note in 1999 with an edition in which Hart-Davis recreated several of his best demonstrations before a live audience at the Royal Institution.
