M SquadFirst Aired in 1957 Starring Lee Marvin as plainclothes cop Lt. Frank Ballinger, M Squad, an elite crime fighting unit, concerned Chicago's crime statistics and the police force that dealt with such matters. It was well done and in Rolling Stone Don Johnson of Miami Vice called it his favorite cop show of all time. The theme is composed and played by Count Basie. There is a great jazzy album of the other music from the soundtrack, the orchestra conducted by Stanley Wilson, compositions by Wilson, Benny Carter, Johnny Williams and Sonny Burke. Interesting location shots and Marvin's unique acting style (which eventually won him an Oscar for Cat Ballou) make this show one of the best "cop" shows without doubt.
