Making the CutFirst Aired in 2004 The first episode focuses on the Bell Making the Cut Tryouts, which attracts a wide range of hockey enthusiasts. Players from every province and territory descend on tryout events located in seven cities-Toronto, Winnipeg, Halifax, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal. Over 4,200 participants turn out-from teenagers to fathers, spanning 19 to 58-all hoping to impress the professional evaluation team and be selected to attend the training camp in Vernon, B.C. The hopefuls include a brother and sister team, a young RCMP officer, an NHL prospect whose career was derailed by a tumor, and a former pro player who put his career on hold to deal with family. However, there is more to the first episode than good individual stories. To make it to Vernon, these athletes must impress the NHL coaches, scouts and trainers during skills and drills sessions, from which the best will move on to three-on-three scrimmages. As they will do in each city, Director of Hockey Operations Jack Birch and his coaching staff must evaluate what they've seen. Meeting in a series of conferences, they compare notes and ratings to separate the prospects from the wannabes. At the end of the first show, General Managers Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan, along with Jack Birch, make the fateful calls, delivering both good news and bad. The reactions are dramatic. 68 of those calls send ecstatic recipients to Vernon, where they will battle for position under the watchful eyes of Bowman and Keenan. Six NHL tryouts are the ultimate goal. Now the real contest will begin: 68 players representing the nation, all with the same dream-to play in the NHL. And they all have a shot at MAKING THE CUT.
