Martian Successor Nadesico

First Aired in 2002

This guide is for the dubbed version of the Japanese anime Kido Senkan Nadeshiko, a sci-fi anime based on Kia Asamiya's original Nadesico manga. A parody of giant robot anime such as Macross, the show focusses on the adventures of the space ship Nadesico- a civilian battleship crewed by a zany and eclectic bunch of weirdoes who just might be Earth's best line of defence against the attacking Jovian lizards. Love, war, giant robots- this show has it all, and it's all hilarious!

Crew of the Nadesico
Yurika Misumaru: Graduating top of her class at university, Yurika won the captaincy by dint of remaining undefeated in combat simulations throughout her course. Away from the battlefield, however, the captain is a complete ditz who spends most of her time chasing after the affections of childhood friend Akito, whom she grew up with on Mars.

Akito Tenkawa: Along with Yurika, Akito is one of the last survivors from the Martian colonies. Despite being hired as a cook, Akito becomes one of the Nadesico's Aestivalis pilots, forcing him to overcome his fear of battle in order to protect his friends. Akito's problems extend beyond the battlefield, however, as onboard the ship he has to fend off the attentions of many of the female crew members.

Minato Haruka: The Nadesico's helmswoman, Minato has perfected the appearance of being a beautiful airhead, but behind her looks there also lurks a keen intellect. Easygoing yet not afraid to stand up for herself, Minato's incisive comments usually get right to the heart of the matter- whether she is discussing the Nadesico's latest mission or just making an ex-boyfriend squirm!

Megumi Reinard: A former seiyuu now acting as the Nadesico's communications officer, Megumi is both compassionate and determined. Her sensitive nature makes it hard for her to compartmentalise in battle, and she finds a kindred spirit in the pacifist Akito.

Ruri Hoshino: The Nadesico's cool and logical science officer may only be twelve years old, but is nonetheless the smartest crewmember on the ship. As the voice of reason on the ship, Ruri usually regards her more emotional crewmates as ‘idiots', but nonetheless comes to form friendships with Akito, her fellow bridge officers, and even the ship's computer.

Goat Hory: A former military officer appointed by Nergal to put together a crew for the Nadesico, Goat now serves as the ship's security officer. Although his quietly professional nature may make him seem like no more another boring man in a suit, there are hidden depths to his personality, and he tries to live his life by his own strict moral code.

Prospector: Employed by Nergal to handle finance and PR, Prospector (no one knows his real name) handles most of the tedious administrative duties onboard the ship, and always has a calculator to hand in order to calculate the cost of any damages. Far from being just a Nergal yes-man, however, Prospector is an independent thinker who isn't afraid to carry out his own research and investigations if he thinks his bosses are hiding something.

Jun Aoi: As executive officer of the Nadesico, it seems only reasonable to expect that Jun should get a lot of screen time and the occasional break, but this is far from the case. Not only does his painfully obvious devotion to Yurika go unnoticed by the captain, but any attempts to distinguish himself usually end in disaster or are forgotten by the next episode. It seems to be Jun's fate to always blend in with the background, no matter how hard he tries.

Seiya Uribatake: Seiya's appointment as chief engineer of the Nadesico was motivated not only by his love of machines, but his desire to get away from his wife and son! Despite being a self-labelled ladies' man, Seiya never actually gets any, and usually has to content himself with drooling over his beloved mecha and model kits instead.

Ryoko Subaru: A brash tomboy Aestivalis pilot, Ryoko's aggressive and determined nature make her a formidable foe on the battlefield. When it comes to romance, however, she's completely clueless- not only does she have a not-so-secret crush on Akito, but she also has to endure her fellow pilots teasing her about it!

Hikaru Amano: An Aestivalis pilot and self-confessed otaku, Hikaru spends most of her off duty time creating her own manga (she seems to have a preference for shounen-ai). Despite her quirky and often misunderstood personality, Hikaru's enthusiasm and skill make her a superior pilot.

Izumi Maki: The third of the Nadesico's three female Aestivalis pilots, Izumi is strange even by Nadesico standards. Having experienced the tragic loss of two fiancés, Izumi seems unwilling to form close relationships with the crew, and instead amuses herself with a constant stream of obscure puns and bad jokes that only she finds funny.

Erina Won: Assigned as co-helmswoman to the Nadesico, Erina was formerly the secretary to Nergal's chairman, which is more than evident in her bossy attitude. Intensely self-interested, Erina is always on the lookout for a way to net a promotion, no matter who she has to step on to get what she wants.

Akatsuki Nagare: A cocky and arrogant Aestivalis pilot, Akatsuki likes to think of himself as a playboy- although onboard the Nadesico the women only seem interested in Akito. Something of a realist, Akatsuki has little time for idealistic fantasies like Gekigangar, and constantly harasses Akito for his love of anime.

Inez Fressange: Found in the Martian desert, with no memory of her early years, Inez was brought up by Nergal researchers, which could explain why she seems more interested in data than people. Nonetheless, Inez takes on the job of the ship's medical offcer, as well as a secondary unofficial role of being the "Explanation Lady"- whenever something needs explaining, she is usually on hand with a detailed presentation.

Ms Howmei: As ship's cook, Howmei and her assistants (Akito and the Howmei Girls) work hard to provide delicious meals for the crew. Well aware that any meal she provides might be a crewmember's last, Howmei keeps a well-stocked galley so that she can provide any dish a crewmember might ask for.
