Matlock PoliceFirst Aired in 1971 Matlock Police was the third of the Crawford police series to go to air, and is probably the most fondly remembered. Set in a large country town some 100 miles from Melbourne, Matlock Police depicted the day-to-day work of country police, acheiving a distinctly Australian flavour in the process. While these days regarded by many as merely a pre-cursor to Blue Heelers, Matlock Police not only established the country policing format very successfully, it was notably more country-based than is Blue Heelers, which relies heavily on suburban-type crimes. Notable for being the struggling O-10 Network's first successful drama series, the program also launched the acting career of Paul Cronin, whose character of motorbike cop Senior Constable Gary Hogan was popular enough to get its own spin-off series - Solo One - in 1976. Contrary to all published reports, it was Matlock Police - not Number 96 - which was the first Australian drama program to feature full-frontal nudity, in the form of a brief "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" skinny-dipping sequence in the first episode.
