Mother Love

First Aired in 1989

Mother Love was a four part dramatisation of a novel of the same name by Domini Taylor, which was first broadcast in 1989. The drama starred Diana Rigg in a BAFTA winning performance as Helena Vesey, the embittered ex-wife of acclaimed conductor Alex Vesey (David McCallum). Helena holds a suffocating affection for her son by Alex, Kit (James Wilby), a barrister. For years Kit has lived a double life in which he has seen his father behind his mother's back, fearful of what she might do if she were ever to find out. When Kit suddenly manages Angela (Fiona Gillies), his new wife is uncertain that she can keep up the lies, but soon she too is drawn into the web of deceit. When the unbalanced Helena finally learns the truth, it becomes clear that she will go to extraordinary lengths to have her revenge...

Mother Love was directed by Simon Langton, adapted by Andrew Davies, script edited by Devora Pope (Tenko) and produced by Ken Riddington. The haunting music for the series was composed by Patrick Gowers.
