No, Honestly

First Aired in 1974

No, Honestly was a comedy series about Charles and Clara Danby, a couple that appeared in front of an audience telling stories about their first meeting, courtship and life as newlyweds. It was based on two books by Charlotte Bingham, one called "Coronet Among the Weeds" and the other "Coronet Among the Grass." The series stars, Pauline Collins and John Alderton, were married to each other in real life. The series was produced by Humphrey Barclay, the force in English television comedy, for London Weekend Television.

The theme song for the series was by singer and composer Lynsey De Paul. Lynsey did another version of the song which made it to #7 in the British pop charts.

We later got a chance to see this talented couple on Public Television here in the States when they appeared in a series called Wodehouse Playhouse. Adaptations of P.G. Wodehouse short stories were featured with John and Pauline playing the primary leads.

They've also appeared together in Upstairs, Downstairs and its spin-off called Thomas and Sarah in 1979. To this date, I don't believe that series has been aired in the US, despite the popularity of Upstairs, Downstairs. Then again, I could be wrong.

In the late 1980's Pauline Collins returned to our attention when she brought her one woman show "Shirley Valentine" to Broadway. "Shirley Valentine" is the story of a middle-aged Liverpool housewife who is tired of the her life, her husband and everything. So she packs it all in and joins her friend on a trip to Greece where she gets away from it all. For her performance she won a Tony Award, and when Paramount decided to make a film of the play she was cast in the lead and received an Academy Award nomination for her effort.

Thanks to Rory McCabe and Jerry Kohl for some additional information.

This was followed by a sequel series called Yes, Honestly, which starred Donal Donnelly and Liza Goddard.
