Pink Lady and JeffFirst Aired in 1980 Pink Lady were a female Japanese musical duo who spoke limited English; Jeff was Jeff Altman, an American comic. As a musical act, Pink Lady had only one charting Billboard single ("Kiss in the Dark" in 1979 which went to #37). NBC capitalized on the interest in the duo by giving them their own variety series. The basic premise of the show played on Pink Lady's lack of knowledge of American culture, which was played out during the comedy bits. Typical formula: Jeff (or a guest star) would set up the pair by discussing some aspect of America then asking them if they knew what he was talking about. Mai and Kei, not hesitating, would immediately answer in unison, "Yes!"... a pause... then would look confused and innocently answer again in unison, "No." The show allowed Pink Lady to perform some of their music, while it also gave Jeff Altman a chance to showcase his comedic talent in solo and ensemble bits. The girls themselves had different personalities on the program... Mai was the innocent one; Kei was the sassy one. Also, Jim Varney ("Hey Vern!") was a featured player on the series. Great guests (Red Buttons, Lorne Greene, Greg Evigan, Bert Parks) and some big musical acts of the day (Blondie, Cheap Trick, Roy Orbison, Donny Osmond, Alice Cooper) made it an interesting and fun show, albeit shortlived. The entire run of the show can be purchased on DVD and recently, the cable channel TRIO took a week to air all the episodes.
