Bare EssenceFirst Aired in 1983 During the era of the 1980's primetime soaps (e.g., "Dallas" & "Dynasty"), NBC tried unsuccessfully to launch its own nightime serial with Bare Essence. Originally, "Bare Essence" aired on CBS in the fall of 1982 as a 4-1/2 hour mini-series and scored huge ratings. However, CBS, whose roster was already full with three primetime soaps of its own, passed on turning "Bare Essence" into a weekly hour drama. NBC, who had never had its own succesful primetime soap, jumped at the chance and brought back "Bare Essence" as a weekly series in February 1983. Unforunately, the success enjoyed by the mini-series did not carry over to the show, which was one of the lowest rated that season, and thus, the show was quickly cancelled. The show starred Genie Francis (fresh from leaving her tremendously popular role as Laura Spencer on "General Hospital"). She was the only major star from the mini-series who made the transition to the weekly series with most other starring roles being recast. However, Francis's "star-power" on daytime didn't translate to nighttime and even stars like Ian McShane, Jennifer O'Neill and Jessica Walter couldn't sustain the show. The storylines on Bare Essence, the weekly show picked up where the miniseries left off. Ambitious Tyger Hayes (Francis) had married into the wealthy Marshall clan and then had to fight for her share of the family perfume empire when her husband Chase was murdered in the premiere episode. A major plotline during the short-run of the show was the mystery of who murdered Chase and in the final episode it was revealed that his killer was Muffin, his sister-in-law. Other plotlines involved Tyger's development of her perfume business, the scheming Ava's attempts to maintain control of the family empire and the equally diabolical Niko's attempts to destroy the Marshall clan. The show premired in February 1983, but was pulled from the schedule due to low ratings after two months. In July 1983, NBC aired the final two episodes as a TV-movie titled, "Bare Essence: The Final Chapter."
