Prince Of Tennis, The

First Aired in 2001

The exciting backdrop of high school tennis serves as the setting for the sports drama and coming-of-age story, The Prince of Tennis. From creator Takeshi Konomi, the manga depicts the on- and off-the-court adventures of Ryoma Echizen, who joins the Seishun Gakuen Middle School tennis team, known for being one of the most competitive teams in Japan. Freshmen rarely have a chance to actually play during their first year, but Ryoma's cool confidence, combined with a deadly, un-returnable "twist serve," gain him a coveted starting spot. With rigorous and extremely intense practices, the upperclassmen of the team expect the very best from themselves, and expect even more from the new members of the team. He's made the cut but can he survive the intense competition? Join Ryoma and other first year players, as they train hard, make friends, and try to find a place for themselves on the team. Also meet Ryoma's cute but chronically shy classmate, Sakuno Ryuzaki, who hopes he will notice her. Ryoma Echizen is The Prince of Tennis. He may be ready for the Seishun Gakuen tennis team, but are they ready for him?

Ryoma Echizen just joined the Seishun Gakuen Middle School tennis team, which is known for being one of the most competitive teams in Japan. Its members are incredibly talented, gifted, and athletic. With rigorous and extremely intense practices, the upperclassmen of the team expect the very best from themselves and they expect even more from the new members of the team. While most of the first years are on pins and needles hoping they won't get cut from the team, Ryoma Echizen is confident, cool, and collected. Some might even say he's cocky, but at least he's got the skills to back up his attitude. With his virtually unreturnable "twist serve," Ryoma is sure to make the starting team.

MANGA:

Volume 1: Ryoma Echizen just joined the Seishun Gakuen Middle School tennis team, which is known for being one of the most competitive teams in Japan. Ryoma has proven his skills by winning four straight American junior tournament titles. With his skills, Ryoma challenges a rule of Seishun Gakuen that freshmen don't represent the team to play in tournaments until summer.

Volume 2: Ryoma Echizen, the Prince of Tennis, has just enrolled at Seishun Academy after spending several years in America winning 4 consecutive U.S. Junior Tournaments. His cool confidence raises the hackles of a few older students on the tennis team, and they challenge him to a game - but none of them even comes close to his skill and knowledge.

Now intramural matches to determine the starting members of the team for the upcoming city tournament are about to begin, and although the rules don't allow 7th graders to play in tournaments, the captain has arranged for Ryoma to enter the ranking matches. Does he have what it takes to truly deserve the title Prince of Tennis?

Volume 3: Prince of Tennis Ryoma Echizen engages in yet another battle of skills and wits, but this time he's not fighting alone. Caught in a quest for victory in a pick-up game of street tennis, tennis prodigy Ryoma and his teammate Momo put their doubles tactics to the test. As the district preliminaries get underway, top-seeded Seishun Academy's finest contend with the best from each school using unorthodox strategies to win their games.

Is Ryoma's doubles skill level as brilliant as his singles maneuvers? And will he win enough matches to own his place as a 7th grade starter in the team? Find out as the Prince of Tennis discovers and applies the doubles techniques he learns from the books and off the street!

Volume 4: The Nationals are coming and Seishun Academy has started training harder than ever! During practice, Rikkai Junior High School’s 8th grader ace Akaya Kirihara stops by to spy on Seishun Academy's team. Luckily, he is caught and escorted off the grounds. But on the way out, he bumps into none other than Ryoma Echizen, the Prince of Tennis.

Pressure rises to the surface as these two ace players size each other up knowing that someday they will duke it out over the net to determine the better player! Soon after, Ryoma and Momo get drawn into a doubles match of tennis – street style! They soon find out that as a team, their selfish ways interfere with each other’s playing style, and they lose the match miserably.

Can these two star players ever learn how to get along and use their legendary skills to complement each other?

Volume 5: With only one victory away from advancing to the city tournament, Seishun Academy fields Prince of Tennis Ryoma Echizen to compete against the mysterious and mumbling Shinji of the Fudomine Team. As the punishing battle of skills unfolds, Ryoma develops a muscle paralysis called "Spot," which leaves him with barely enough strength to grip the racket, much less swing it.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Ryoma unleashes a "two-sword fighting style" technique that only talented, ambidextrous players are able to execute. Will Ryoma have the strength to pull himself out of the ditch and beat Shinji? And what awaits his ex-pro tennis player father, Nanjiro, when he comes to watch his son play?

Volume 6: With Coach Ryuzaki's blessing, Team Captain Kunimitsu Tezuka challenges the Prince of Tennis Ryoma Echizen to a bitter duel to settle their differences. Given Ryoma's astounding skill and composure, will Kunimitsu's best game be good enough to win?

Meanwhile, with the City Tournament fast approaching, Seishun Academy's campus is crawling with spies who are out to gather data on their players' strengths and weaknesses. As the electric thrill of competition permeates the air, will Seishun Academy win enough matches to surge through to the next round?

And what peril lurks behind the menacing ways of St. Rudolph's manager and strategist Hajime Mizuki?

Volume 7: As the road to the Nationals narrows, Seishun Academy squares off with Saint Rudolph. Through the maneuverings of Hajime, Saint Rudolph's cunning manager, Ryoma gets matched up with Yuta—known to many as "Lefty Killer." With an unorthodox game laced with reverse spins and angles, Yuta's game ignites against the seemingly inexperienced-against-lefties Ryoma.

Meanwhile, the Seishun doubles tandem of Eiji and Shuichiro assume the Australian formation to break a tie. Is this a desperate attempt to win, or a well-calculated strategy?

Volume 8: As far as winning strategies go, no effective game plan can be carried out without one essential factor—stamina. And when Seishun Academy’s Eiji succumbs to exhaustion, their chances of securing the crucial win over St. Rudolph’s fades with each drop of their hard-earned sweat.

Then, Seishun’s setback turns into an even more daunting situation when their team equalizer, Ryoma Echizen, treads unfamiliar waters in his match against the infamous lefty killer Yuta. With Yuta’s impressive win-loss record of 16-0 against left-handers, Ryoma’s in for one tricky match...

Volume 9: The much-anticipated match between Seishun Academy's Ryoma Echizen and St. Rudolph's Yuta is underway, and neither of them is giving in to each other's intimidation techniques.

Upon orders from Hajime, St. Rudolph's cunning team manager, Yuta must aim for Ryoma's left eye, which was accidentally injured during his previous match. Battling all odds to secure his team's victory - as well as his own on-court safety - can Ryoma formulate a strategy to tame Yuta's killer twist spin shot? And is Yuta really that evil?

OUT SEPTEMBER 6TH 2005

Volume 10: In preparation for the City Tournament, Seishun Academy's team captain Kunimitsu Tezuka decides to hold intra-squad games. It's a routine way for the team players to get some much-needed practice matches, but it’s all fun and games until someone's competitive nature surfaces. Ryoma is pitted against Shusuke, and Ryoma wastes no time in putting on the pressure against his teammate. But with his tenacious strategy known as Higuma Otoshi, Shusuke’s got a few tricks of his own...
