Richmond HillFirst Aired in 1988 This twice weekly soap originally launched in Australia in January 1988 and was billed as Sydney's answer to Melbourne's 'Neighbours' which was also airing on Network 10 at the same time of 'Richmond Hill's launch. Both shows were made by the Grundy Organisation. Screened on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30pm, the show starred some very high profile actors & actresses, but the show's biggest mistake was that it was far too bland. Notable stars were Maggie Kirkpatrick, fresh from her role as Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson in 'Prisoner' appeared here as Ivy Hackett. Another ex-Wentworth inmate, Amanda Muggleton (Chrissie Latham) took the role of Connie Ryan. Gwen Plumb, Ada in 'The Young Doctors' played Mum Foote who took in wayward children and Paula Duncan, who seemingly appeared in everything Australian in the 70's & 80's played depressed and neurotic Janet Bryant. Also notable is that 'Richmond Hill' was the first soap that starred Emily Symons. Here she played bitchy Anne Costello and when the show ended, she moved onto 'Home & Away' and now stars in 'Emmerdale' as barmaid Louise Appleton in the UK. Despite running for a year, 92 episodes and being reasonably popular, 'Richmond Hill' was axed to make way for the more hip and trendier soap 'E Street'. In the UK, 'Richmond Hill' was one of many Australian imports to reach the screen after the huge success of 'Neighbours'. Networked all of ITV regions from October 1988. Later the series became regional as Central and Granada lessened their output of the show. It went out at 2.15 in the afternoon on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
