Beat the Geeks

First Aired in 2001

Beat the Geeks is a game show that tests contestants knowledge in the various fields of pop-culter. There are three main geeks (one each in Movies, Music, and TV) and one Guest Geek that specializes in a certain field of pop-culture. All geeks wear scholarly robes and proudly wear medals signifying their domination in their field.

In the first season, the show started strong with the presences of Marc Edward Heuck, the Movie Geek, and Paul Goebel, the TV Geek. However, it had a hard time sticking with a Music Geek. Michael Jolly was the original one when production began, but when he couldn't make certain taping dates, Andy Zax was called to fill in. The problem began when producers realized they had two great Music Geeks. They alternated between Jolly and Zax, however, they stuck with Zax to finish production after Jolly started to lose too much. Accompanying them were guest geeks for the TV shows Friends, The Simpsons, The Sopranos, South Park, and Star Trek. As well, the guest geeks for movies were in the Horror genre, the James Bond franchise, and Star Wars. Also, guest geeks for music were in the Hip Hop genre and Michael Jackson. The final guest geeks were specialists in Comic Books and Playboy. All guest geeks get five episodes to display their stuff, but because a thirteenth guest geek couldn't be found, the Star Trek geek received an additional five episodes.

The second season brought about an almost complete revamp on the show. A new host, new robes, new format, and increased budget brought a sharper and sleaker look to the show. Gone were the stale maroon robes in favor or vibrant colored ones. The show had trouble again with sticking with a Music Geek. Andy Zax started the new production, but was replaced because it was felt he didn't have a strong screen presence. When they realized his replacement, Michael Farmer, just plain sucked, Andy was brought back to finish the rest of the episodes. Not all the guest geeks from the first season were carried over as well. Of the originals, only the The Simpsons, South Park, Star Trek, Horror, James Bond, Comic Books, and Playboy geeks remained the same. The Friends and Star Wars geeks were recast and new geeks included The Beatles, Saturday Morning, Toy, Nudity in Movies, Planet of the Apes, Wrestling, and KISS. All guest geeks again got five episodes, except for Planet of the Apes, Wrestling, and KISS, all of whom got one episode. The Nudity in Movies Geek got two episodes. The reason he got an extra one was because complications arose when producers tried to get an under-aged Harry Potter Geek on the show.

Here are the rules for each season:

Season 1Season 2
First Round3 contestants face off against each other. There are 8 toss-up questions, 2 from each field. Each question is worth 10 points. The contestant with the lowest score loses. In the event of a tie for last, a numerical question will be asked. The contestant who is closest without going over stays in the game.3 contestants face off against each other and the Geeks. There are 4 toss-up questions, 1 from each field. Each question is worth 10 points. The contestant who answers correctly on each question goes against the Geek for another question. If the Geek gets it right or the contestant gets it wrong, the contestant loses 5 points. If the Geek gets it wrong or the contestant gets it right, the contestant gains 10 points. If neither Geek nor contestant ring in, there is no change in points. The contestant with the lowest score loses. In the event of a tie for last, a numerical question will be asked. The contestant who is closest without going over stays in the game.
Second Round2 contestants get one chance to go 1-on-1 with a Geek for his or her medal. If the round starts off in a tie, a question of no point value is asked. The contestant who correctly answers it goes first. If there is no tie, the contestant with the most points goes first. Each medal is worth 20 points. The Guest Geek's medal is worth an additional 20 points. If a Geek answers wrong, the contestant gets the medal and the points. If the contestant answers wrong, the other contestant may steal and answer correctly. If answered correctly, the other contestant gets only 10 points, but no medal. If after two questions each there is no wrong answer, the contestant and Geek move to a 15 second Geek-off where they must give as many valid answers as possible in 15 seconds. The Geek must give more corrects answers than the contestant. If the Geek answers less or ties, the Geek must forfeit his or her medal.2 contestants get one chance to go 1-on-1 with a Geek for his or her medal. Third RoundSame rules as in second round, only now Geek medals are worth 40 points, with an additional 20 points still given to the Guest Geek's medal. Also, if there is no tie, the contestant with the least points goes first. At the end of the round, there is Geek-qualizer. The host lists off stuff and each contestant must identify if it's best known for Movies, Music, or TV. Each correct answer is worth 10 points and there are a total of 150 possible points. Any incorrect answer or a freeze ends the Geek-quailizer for that contestant. If after the Geek-qualizer there is a tie, a numerical question will be asked. The contestant who is closest without going over stays in the game. The winner goes on to challege 1 geek for the final showdown for a $5000 prize.Same rules as in second round, only now Geek medals are now worth 40 points, with an additional 20 points still given to the Guest Geek's medal.
