Simple Life, The (1998)First Aired in 1998 Judith Light made her return to TV in this forgettable sitcom. TV homemaker Sara Campbell built an empire as America's foremost authority on living a country lifestyle – despite the fact that she was raised in Queens, and spent most of her adult life in New York City. So when the opportunity arose to broadcast her show, "The Simple Life," from a farmhouse upstate, she jumped at the opportunity and uprooted her family. With her were her cynical (and horny) mother, Muriel, who didn't think Sara could survive in the country, and her college dropout daughter, Freddi, who hated being in the middle of nowhere. She turned her new home into the TV studio, much to the chagrin of Luke, the farm's hunky foreman, who was bringing up his deceased sister's two children, Will and Charlotte. Luke was constantly amused by Sara's ignorance when it came to real country living, but he found himself equally attracted and repulsed by her. Greg was Sara's snooty British producer, who was bitter about having to move his life to the country as well. Melanie was Sara's incredibly loopy stalker-turned-assistant, and Jeff and Nick were crewmembers for Sara's show. This was CBS's second Martha Stewart parody to hit in early 1998. The first, Style and Substance, which starred Jean Smart and Nancy McKeon, went on hiatus after a mere 5 weeks, then this series hit the air months later. Allegedly, Stewart, who's on show was distributed by CBS, blew a gasket when she learned of the two series, so CBS went out of their way to get them canceled. When The Simple Life had finished airing, Style and Substance returned in the timeslot vacated by this series, where they aired every episode except the finale (which was a direct lampoon of Stewart).
