Stand by Your Man

First Aired in 1992

In the spring of 1992, the FOX network was looking to strengthen the last hour of their Sunday night line up. For this effort they adapted the successful British series "Boys of a Feather" to join their successful Sunday night shows such as Get A Life, Married... with Children, and The Simpsons.

The sitcom stared Rosie O'Donnell and Melissa Gilbert as New Jersey sisters whose husbands were arrested for robbery and sent to jail. At the time O'Donnell was on the verge of skyrocketing to fame with her role in A League of Their Own, amongst others. In fact, all the press relating to the show, ‘pre-talk show' O'Donnell is referred to as a "comic and/or VH1 video jockey."

Gilbert-Brinkman; then married to Bo Brinkman, was best known for her childhood role on Little House On The Prarie. Gilbert-Brinkman was excited about a sitcom because of its close-to-home, reliable work schedule. As Gilbert told USA TODAY"an hour drama was out…. you don't have a life. You are no longer protected by child labor laws.''

Critics unilaterally panned the show. The New York Times reviewed the show on March 31, 1992 comparing it to the also short-lived Linda Lavin/Patricia Heaton sitcom Room for Two. John O'Connor writes, "How do you prefer your American family, warmly amusing or wacko ridiculous?" Stand By Your Man was obviously the "wacko ridiculous" series. The New York Times continued to pan the series saying, "The wit is about as subtle as a machete." O'Connor predicts that "with the humor shuffling nonstop between naughty vaudeville routines and the toilet Stand by your man may finally give FOX its often sought and just as often failed opportunity to duplicate the relative success of Married... with Children. Any success at FOX is a premium these days…" USA TODAY called it "the worst thing to happen to Tammy Wynette's anthem since Hillary Clinton." Referring to the shows stars, the reviewer wrote "Rosie's angry drone is a pip, while Melissa's shrill mewling is a menace. Rosie is a chip off Roseanne (pre-Arnold, pre-bimbo wanna-be), but Man isn't worth standing by."

While the show ran eight episodes, FOX didn't stand by the show and did not renew it when they announced their schedule in May.
