State, TheFirst Aired in 1993 The State was a cool sketch comedy show on MTV in the early 1990s. As with almost all MTV content, it was aimed at a teenage audience, but much of it would be funny to anyone. Most of the sketches remain funny to this day and - unlike most shows of the age - would not be considered dated or stale (with the possible exception of some of the music.) Even the few mediocre sketches on the show are better than 99% of today's sketch comedy. If you have copies of this show on tape, back them up, digitize them, preserve and cherish them. MTV has never shown repeats of the episodes on TV and only released one hour-long compilation, The State: Skits and Stickers, on VHS and even that is very dificult to find. The show was to go onto CBS to eventually rival Saturday Night Live, but dismal ratings for a CBS State special doomed the entire show and set it adrift.
