Super, The

First Aired in 1972

When CBS had a surprise hit in 1971 with "All In The Family," the other networks followed suit with similar sitcoms dealing with working class life. NBC responded with the equally successful "Sanford and Son." ABC's entry, "The Super," failed to find an audience, and was canceled after only three months.

"The Super" depicted the trials and tribulations of a blue-collar Italian-American family in Brooklyn. Richard Castellano starred as patriarch Joe Girelli, a superintendent of a squalid apartment building. Bruno Kirby co-starred as his dimwitted teen-aged son, who assisted with--and often bungled--building maintenance.

As "All In The Family" broke previous television taboos with racial slurs and the sound of toilets flushing, so did "The Super." The opening credits depicted Castellano sweeping the sidewalk in front of the building and stepping in dog waste!

In it's brief run, "The Super" even had something of a catch phrase. Whenever Bruno Kirby would foul up a task, Richard Castellano would slap him on the back of the head, admonishing, "Yer a rotten kid!"

Introduced as a summer replacement series in June of 1972, "The Super" failed to garner ratings, and was gone by September.
