Tales of The Wizard of Oz

First Aired in 1961

Tales of The Wizard of Oz was the second cartoon series produced at Rankin-Bass Productions, famous for their Christmas specials such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." The animation studio was going strong with their puppet-animation production "The New Adventures Of Pinocchio." This was also their first cel-animated cartoon, done in very stylized limited animation that became synonomous with classic UPA, Jay Ward and Hanna-Barbera cartoons. The characters and settings were very flat, abstract and two-dimensional, but they provided excellent comedy and humor. These cartoons were both for adults and children alike.

The syndicators ordered 120 3-to-5 minute segments from R-B, which were produced and aired from time to time, possibly between other cartoons on Saturday mornings or as part of TV clown programming.

To avoid legal problems with the classic L. Frank Baum books and the 1939 MGM feature film, they changed most of the characters' personalities.

DOROTHY GALE AND TOTO - The famous little girl and dog (here, Toto's a white Scottish Terrier) who are trapped in Oz. She longs to get back to Kansas, but in the meantime, she bakes good food and she is able to get the characters out of a jam and help them with their problems.

THE WIZARD OF OZ - In this cartoon, this little old midget wizard can actually perform magic! His specialty is card tricks, and he usually goofs up with his magic, and is usually too busy to help those in need. He has a voice similar to W.C. Fields (sometimes calling Dorothy "my little chickadee") and has a hat and chemistry set full of tricks!

SOCRATES THE STRAWMAN - This scarecrow longs for a brain, and there's a good reason, too. He's a brainless fool! He always makes mistakes and misunderstands people. Sometimes his mistakes cause big trouble!

RUSTY THE TINMAN - In this series, the man of tin is a bully! This is cause he has no heart, so he results in making fun of people (especially Socrates) and sometimes hurting their feelings.

DANDY LION - The king of jungleis a big coward! He is always afraid of stuff and he is spooked easily. Rusty and the Munchkins have a fun time scaring him. The one person Dandy Lion fears most is the Wicked Witch of the West. When he's scared he usually says, "YOWWWWWW! MAAMAAAAAAAAAAA!"

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST - This hag is small, green, and is more of the evil grandmother-type! She tries to be scary, and only winds up scaring Dandy Lion. She also longs for a boyfriend, and treats brooms like they are cars. Her bad tricks include stuffing scarecrows into mattresses, causing train wrecks, turning people invisible, stealing houses from their owners, and the list goes on!
