TexasFirst Aired in 1980 When the CBS night-time soap "Dallas" (1978-91) became a huge ratings success, NBC decided to try a similar formula during daytime. In 1980, one of the most popular villainess characters on "Another World," Iris Cory Carrington, was spun off into her own show, called "Texas" when her son Dennis Carrington moved to Houston, with Iris in tow. Beverlee McKinsey played Iris, who had spent years causing mayhem in Bay City (on "Another World"). (She got star billing on "Texas.") To make her a little more sympathetic as a leading character, the writers gave her a previously untold backstory: Many years earlier, she'd loved and lost a young man named Alex Wheeler (Bert Kramer). Unknown to Iris, Alex was pennyless, and after a tender night of love, he disappeared to go earn his fortune and become worthy of the rich young woman. She convinced Eliot Carrington the child she was carrying was his and lived a lie for decades to follow, never getting over Alex's rejection, and became a manipulative schemer. In early installments of "Texas" (first aired as part of "Another World") Iris and Alex rediscovered each other and their stormy romance was one of the early main storylines--climaxing when a jealous Eliot shot the groom at Iris and Alex's wedding. To protect Alex, his nephew, Ryan, told everyone--including Iris--that Alex had died of his wounds. Eventually the "widow" learned the truth, and her accidental discovery of her supposed dead husband in a hospital room was one of the most memorable performances in daytime history. McKinsey and Kramer left the show in 1981, and it stumbled along without them, never achieving high ratings. The show was cancelled in 1982. In a small bit of irony, "Texas" aired its final episode on December 31, 1982- the same date that the first "Another World" spinoff, "Somerset," aired its finale 6 years earlier.
