Thriller (1973)First Aired in 1973 This series was created and written by Brian Clemens, the accomplished screen and script writer, known primarily for his association with the classic 1960s series, "The Avengers." From 1973 to 1975, the series was shown on Saturday nights at 9 p.m. on Associated Television (ATV) networks in Britain and on various weeknights on "ABC Wide World of Entertainment" in the U.S. While the British episodes ran about 65 minutes in length, the American versions were padded out to about 80 minutes. In the 1980s, the episodes were repackaged into TV movies and distributed worldwide. In an effort to appeal to the U.S. audiences, the program prominently featured well-known American actors, such as Carroll Baker, Polly Bergen, Paul Burke, Darleen Carr, Gary Collins, Kim Darby, Bradford Dillman, Barbara Feldon, Christopher and Lynda Day George, Gayle Hunnicutt, Carol Lynley, George Maharis, Donna Mills, Barry Nelson, Patrick O'Neal, Joanna Pettet, and Julie Sommars. Also appearing in the series were famous British actors, including Jenny Agutter, Francesca Annis, Jeremy Brett, Tom Conti, Denholm Elliott, Judy Geeson, Bob Hoskins, Michael Jayston, Richard Johnson, Freddie Jones, Patrick Magee, Hayley Mills, Helen Mirren, Robert Powell, and Stephen Rea. This series was praised for its excellent writing and direction. Audience fear, anticipation, and interest were maintained by atmosphere and tension, rather than graphic violence, and by unexpected twists and turns in the stories.
