Waterfront BeatFirst Aired in 1990 Created by Phil Redmond, the British cop drama Waterfront Beat was intended as the BBC's response to ITV's successful "The Bil". The BBC claimed that the series would look at "the way one non metropolitan, urban police force comes to terms with economic regeneration by reorganising its City Division creating a separate Inner City Waterfront Division." The new series would explore "aspects of police work not normally featured and disabuse us of the notion that TV crime is always cracked in 50 minutes." John Ashton starred as Detective Chief Superintendent Don Henderson, head of the new division, and Brian McArdle as PC Ronnie Barker. The series portrayed the challenges of policing the busy Docklands area but had time to explore the the impact of the job on the officers' personal lives. The show lasted just two seasons, although the BBC would try again with "Out of the Blue" (1995/96) and "Merseybeat" (2001-04).
